With a multitude or wrecks and beautiful dive sites diving in the Far North is a must do experience for any keen diver visiting the region. Water temperatures are consistently a few degrees warmer than further south, and as well as the famous wrecks the HMNZS Frigate Canterbury and The Rainbow Warrior, Northland is within easy driving distance of Tutukaka and the world famous Poor Knights Islands.
The Bay of Islands' first artificial reef was 'born' when the former Navy frigate F421 - HMNZS Canterbury, was scuttled in Deep Water Cove. The hulk is expected to become a popular feature of the Northland Dive Trail - a string of wrecks from Tutukaka to Matauri Bay - and will have significant social and economic consequences for the area. As a reef, it is expected to boost flagging inshore fish stocks.

The Rainbow Warrior was Greenpeace's flagship on its way to protest France's nuclear testing on the Mururoa Atoll when it was sunk by French saboteurs on July 10, 1985, in Auckland Harbour. Three years after the bombing Greenpeace gifted the Warrior to the sea and she now lies as an artificial reef in the Cavalli Island group, a refuge for the marine life she was sunk trying to protect.
At a max depth of 27m the Warrior is now home to a huge variety of aquatic life and is a world renowned dive site.
