Wine & Food

Northland is fast becoming the new frontier for gastrotourists, people who head off in search of fresh food experiences and delectable wines. North of Auckland, where the balmy climate nurtures subtropical fruit and gourmet vegetables, it's also home to some delicious products based on what's grown in the region.

Northland vineyards consistently produce medal-winning wines. All welcome visitors for tasting and cellar door sales. Accolades have been awarded to Northland cheesemakers for their delicious cheeses. Citrus fruits and olives are grown widely. Locally made chocolate and locally roasted coffee beans are a treat. The seafood is plentiful, fresh and magnificently varied.

The North has an established reputation for chardonnays and pinot gris and now reds such as syrah (shiraz) and pinotage are becoming just as highly regarded. Northland vineyards are consistently producing medal-winning wines - Marden Estates's Black Rocks Chardonnay 2005 and Okahu Estate's Shipwreck Bay Merlot Cabernet 2004 both won gold medals at New Zealand's oldest established wine show, the Royal Easter Show for 2004 and ten other medals were also awarded to Northland wineries.
